Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a branch of orthopaedics physiotherapy. Physiotherapists specialising in this branch take post-graduate courses to gain specific knowledge on how to assess and treat patients with pelvic floor related conditions. The origin of these conditions can be related to muscles, joints, connective tissues and/or nerves. The conditions that pelvic floor physiotherapists most commonly treat are urinary and/or fecal incontinence, perinatal dysfunctions, abdominal separation, pelvic organ prolapse, peri and post-menopausal problems and pelvic pain, including dyspareunia (painful intercourse). Pelvic floor physiotherapists use varied modalities to treat these conditions, such as education, breathing exercises, external and internal manual therapy, strengthening and endurance exercises, stretches, body awareness and coordination of the pelvic floor muscles. The best results are achieved when the patient and physiotherapist work in partnership.
